If anyone has had, or is having, difficulties dealing with a trauma related stress (e.g PTSD), and they are available to physically attend either UNSW Campuses at Randwick or Westmead Hospital, it is definitely worth getting involved with their Traumatic Stress Clinic program.
Genuine Help for PTSD – Trauma Sufferers – No Bullsh*t
My WorkCover claim ran for just over 3 years. I was a production manager and was violently assaulted by a fellow employee with a coward’s punch. Well, kind of, he grabbed me by surprise from behind and then threw two rapid and well-targeted punches.
Apart from some facial fractures, nerve damage and whiplash (it could have been a lot worse). Shortly after the attack, my assailant issued me with a death threat and expressed his keen desire to finish me off. It was not until the Police arrived that I discovered, that the individual involved had a history of violence, as did many members of his family.
In short I developed an Acute Stress Response to the incident and this later developed into Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
In spite of some of the best psychological care even after 50 odd sessions, I could not escape my feelings of anxiety, fear, anger, rage, constant irritability, suicidal ideology, nightmares, night sweats etc. etc.
Despite their “best efforts” their activities did not seem to have a positive effect on my condition (an experience that every long term injured worked has faced, or will face, time and time again).
To cut a long story short (thank God, I hear you cry), the Insurer finally made a settlement offer that would enable me some time for true treatment and rehabilitation and their offer was accepted. I thought I would start to recover following the end of WorkCover hostilities. To my surprise – I didn’t.
I became aware of a Traumatic Stress Clinic in Sydney from a brief mention in an, Insurer paid, 60 page IME Report.
The Traumatic Stress Clinic is totally free as it is a fully funded research program. It runs for 9 weeks and I can vouch for the effectiveness of the program. Every member of their staff has been kind, respectful and, most importantly, understand trauma related stress and anxiety.
Following this treatment, I have a totally different outlook regarding my life, how I process my thoughts, memories and feelings.
Before the treatment, I had no thoughts of ever being able to function satisfactorily in society again. Now I am building confidence every day and I have been taught techniques to understand, recognise and deal with difficult situations.
